Never Been to an Anglican Service...? Our worship service- our liturgy- might seem a bit structured and formal at first but you are likely to encounter form, prayers and hymns you already know. You may find some customs in the worship services unfamiliar, but typically, Anglicans stand to praise God, sit for listening to instruction, and kneel to pray. Our service is centered on Scripture, very reverent and worshipful and focuses on the relationship Christ established between us and Him through Holy Communion. The word liturgy translates rougly as 'the work of the people'. It is the continuous cycle of prayer reflecting Paul's admonition to "pray unceasingly". Like an athelete training to build the body, the liturgy is a discipline to develop discipleship and sanctifcation. Paul says: "Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it." 1 Cor 9:24 . Our ultimate prize is to rightly worship God among the host of heaven and for this we believe we need preperation. To paraphrase Paul: 'Therefore we run thus: not with uncertainty. '
If it's all brand new to you --
If at first you sit when we stand or stand when we kneel, if you don't already know some of the ancient prayers we use -- well, God certainly won't mind, and neither will we! "Let all things be done decently and in order." 1 Cor14:40
